This program has been initiated in September 2009 for a first 3 years period: DAAD will support maximum 10 German post-docs staying at NII for at least one year, eventually renewable one year more. During that period the post-doc will work on his/her own research project with the help of a senior NII researcher as a “mentorâ€. It that respect if the candidate does not know a NII researcher it is better he/she checks on NII research www pages if there is at NII a researcher working in that domain who can interact with him/her.
NII is the only National research Institute on Informatics in Japan. It seeks to advance integrated research and development activities in information-related fields, including networking, software, and content. These activities range from theoretical and methodological work to applications. NII promotes cross-functional interdisciplinary research and promotes synergistic efforts between academic disciplines to enable progress in new and developing domains. NII advances informatics research with the goals of creating future value, furthering social and public contributions, promoting interdisciplinary approaches to information processing and partnerships among industry, government, academic, and civilian organizations.
Research at NII (http://www.nii.ac.jp/en/faculty/) is developed in 4 research divisions and various Research Centers. Permanent NII researchers belong to one of the division where “fundamental†research is done. In Research Centers some of the permanent staff together with visiting researchers and contracted engineers are working on strategic research on “priority projectsâ€. As an inter-university research Institute NII has developed very strong research connection with all the major Japanese universities and private research centers (NTT, Fujitsu, Toshiba, NEC, NHK, etc.) that will allow the Post-doc to participate in many informal or formal workshops
NII has developed a very proactive international activity conducting joint research with overseas research institutions. Such efforts are based on presently more than 60 memoranda of understanding (MOUs) on international exchange concluded with universities and research institutions from around the world. That international activity will allow Post-docs to invite master or Ph.D students to work at NII under their supervision for minimum 2 months up to 6 months even longer. Moreover NII has developed a program of “NII International advanced lectures series on ICT†where foreign lecturers give a series of research seminar on a specific topic. Last but not least NII has launched recently the “Shonan meetings†equivalent to Dagstuhl Seminars. It is initiated by at most three organizers (one from Asia), established leaders in their field, representing the different communities invited to the Seminar, preferably from different institutions. NII invites on their behalf about 25 to 35 researchers of international standing from academia and industry. It lasts usually for four days.
The German post-doc will benefit of all these activities.
